Embracing Autumn

Autumn in Barnstaple is a season of vibrant colours, crisp air and cozy experiences. There is plenty to see and do, here's a quick guide to making the most of this beautiful season.

Explore the great outdoors

1. Exmoor National Park

Just a short drive from Barnstaple, Exmoor National Park offers stunning autumnal landscapes. Enjoy a hike through the moorlands, where you can see the heather in bloom and spot wildlife like red deer and Exmoor ponies. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the breathtaking views.

2. Saunton Sands

Take a leisurely stroll along Saunton Sands, one of North Devon’s most beautiful beaches. The autumn light creates a magical atmosphere, and the beach is often quieter at this time of year and dogs are allowed all year round.

3. Tarka Trail

For cycling enthusiasts, the Tarka Trail is a must. This scenic route follows the path of Tarka the Otter and offers beautiful views of the countryside. The trail is suitable for all ages and abilities, making it a great family activity.

Indulge in local flavours

1. The Boutport Cafe 

A hidden gem in, this cafe is currently rated number 1 on Tripadvisor for restaurants in Barnstaple. This family and dog friendly independent cafe has great coffees, teas and fresh food. 

Serving traditional breakfasts, freshly prepared sandwiches/paninis and light lunches. Don't forget the Devon cream tea with fresh baked homemade scones & cakes, 'wacky waffles' and amazing milkshakes.

They buy local, cook fresh and make their own delicious sweet treats!

2. Maiden Arch by Robert Bryant

For those who enjoy modern British Fine Dining, look no further than Maiden Arch. Recommended in the Michelin Guide, serving seasonal food cooked with skill and passion in an intimate and relaxed dining room with attentive, knowledgeable staff. 

You are sure to receive a warm welcome from well travelled local Chef Robert Bryant as you enter into a cosy bar and up the spiral staircase to a dining room with exposed brick walls and a vaulted ceiling. 

Confident cooking is carefully thought-out and dishes deliver a good balance of flavours and textures.

3. Fullam Restaurant

If Asian food is more your style, then a trip to the Fullam Restaurant is sure to be a treat. 

Established in 1993, this is a cosy family run restaurant specialising in British-Chinese Cuisine. The award winning restaurant is set within a 200 year old Coaching Inn and prides itself in delivering its tradition of impeccable cuisine and service.

Seasonal events and activities

1. FoodFest North Devon

One of the most highly anticipated events in the North Devon foodie calendar, this event is dedicated to celebrating the local culinary scene, bringing together an impressive lineup of chefs, restaurateurs, and artisan producers. The event is scheduled for Sunday, 20 October, at the Barnstaple Pannier Market and will showcase a wide array of local food and drink exhibitors.

Attendees can look forward to sampling and purchasing an eclectic mix of cuisines, from traditional British fare to international street food, along with an extensive selection of craft beers, ciders, wines, and spirits.

2. Halloween at The Big Sheep

During half term week, the Big Sheep, near Bideford will be holding lots of spook-tacular Halloween fun, and every child will get a free pumpkin when you book online.

3. Autumnfest at Arlington Court

  • Discover displays around the grounds, visitor reception, tea-rooms and gardens as Arlington Court celebrate the beauty of autumn colour.
  • Visit the house to see the harvest table and floral displays.
  • See the Atlantic giant pumpkin on display in the garden.
  • Follow the scarecrow trail around the gardens and grounds, made by school children, locals groups and volunteers.
  • Garden talks every Wednesday through October, 12:30 – 1pm.
  • Take part in a spotter trail for children, taking in the best if Autumn around Arlington.
  • Family crafting in the activity room, taking place daily.
