Final phase of Barnstaple’s landmark riverside redevelopment underway
The regeneration of Taw Wharf has now entered its final phase, marking a significant step towards the completion of the transformation of Barnstaple’s riverside.
The final chapter will deliver 14 affordable and 13 market sale homes in the joint development between North Devon Homes and Pearce Construction.
Paul Scovell, Development Manager at North Devon Homes, said, “We are delighted to begin work on the last phase of this development which will include 12 one-bedroom apartments and 2 two-bedroom homes, which will be available for social rent via Devon Home Choice in Spring 2026.
Paul adds, “The delivery of these 14 affordable homes has been made possible thanks to a £1.4million grant secured from Homes England together with our trusted partnerships with renowned Barnstaple based developer, Pearce Construction, North Devon Council, Taylor Lewis Quantity Surveyors, Woodward Smith Architects and Webbers Estate Agents. We are proud that through this collaboration, this once derelict brown field site has been regenerated to provide high quality homes and increase the number of affordable homes for local people across North Devon”.
Paul Knox, Managing Director of Pearce Construction, added, “These new high-quality homes represent more than just housing, they are part of a thriving, inclusive community, rooted in the unique history and beauty of this waterfront location. The collaboration between ourselves and North Devon Homes has been a strong and successful partnership, playing a key role in driving forward regeneration in North Devon. We are looking forward to working with our partner NDH in the future to further deliver homes that serve our local communities.
He continues, “The development at Taw Wharf has created a vibrant new waterfront destination in Barnstaple. Located in a stunning setting with views along the River Taw, the completed development will comprise 172 new outstanding homes, including 37 affordable homes, in a mix of 1 to 5-bedroom apartments, penthouses, and townhouses.”
The superior, contemporary homes at Taw Wharf are arranged within buildings that reflect the character and materials of the local architecture, while also paying homage to the site’s maritime heritage and riverside wharf setting.
The concluding phase of construction at Taw Wharf is scheduled for completion by autumn 2026, delivering 13 homes for market sale, including 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, and 2 and 3 bedroom houses.
