Stay safe from fake HMRC scams

As the tax year ends, scammers try to trick people into giving away personal information or money. Here are some common scams and tips to stay safe.

Common Scams

  1. Fake HMRC Messages: Scammers pretend to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) through emails, texts, or calls.
  2. Pressure Tactics: They might threaten you with arrest or legal action to make you send money quickly.
  3. Suspicious Links: Be careful with links in messages that look strange or urgent.
  4. Requests for Personal Info: HMRC will never ask for your card number or banking PIN.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Don’t Respond: Ignore suspicious emails, texts, or calls.
  2. Avoid Clicking Links: Don’t click on links or open attachments in suspicious messages.
  3. Keep Personal Info Private: Don’t share your personal details unless you’re sure who you’re dealing with.
  4. Verify with HMRC: If unsure, contact HMRC directly to check if a message is real.
  5. Report Scams: Report suspicious emails to HMRC and forward texts to 60599. If you think you’ve been scammed, contact Action Fraud online or call 0300 123 2040.
